Torriana
Torriana rises on a rocky spur in Valmarecchia, m 337 above sea level.
Hanged on the impracticable cliff, it was called “Scorticata” until 1938.
Stronghold of the seigniory of the Malatesta, it was an important centre of light signallings for the valley in the twelfth century.
Today Torriana is commune in the province of Rimini and has for hamlet the near village of Montebello, known for the castle of the Guidi di Bagno and for the legend of Azzurrina.
From the top the ruins of the fortress and of the sighting tower, of the XIII century, welcome visitors already in the distance.
The ancient village, of Villanovan foundation, was inhabited since ancient times and its stretegic location was long contended.
But from 1186 to 1462 it remained unconquered bulwark of the Malatesta of Verucchio.
With the final capitulation of Sigismondo Pandolfo, by the Montefeltro, it went to the Church.
It also experienced the domination of the Borgia and of the Medici, then became property of the Church again.
In 1519 it was enfeoffed to Count Pio of Carpi.
In modern times, Benito Mussolini renamed the village Torriana.
Important agricultural center, the inhabited place lies at the foot of the calcareous rock, whose slopes have long been eroded by the quarrymen and marble workers.
Sights: the ruins of the fortress of Malatesta (in the past unfortunately poorly renovated: the gate, two large circular towers, a cistern, part of the walls and the donjon); the civic tower, of the thirteenth century, from which the modern name Torriana derives; Piazza Allende, a terrace on the valley; the fountain “The Tree of water” by the artist and poet Tonino Guerra; the bell tower (what remains of a church that was destroyed during the Second World War), located on the top, offers one of the most extraordinary views on Valmarecchia and on Verucchio.
Places of worship: the Church of St. Vicinio preserves valuable paintings and the organ that was donated by Mussolini in 1938.
For people who love nature: the landscape of the area of Torriana and Montebello is one of the most important of the territory.
In 1993 the Faunal Oasis of Torriana-Montebello has been established: it extends over 1200 hectares and hosts the Naturalistic Observatory of Valmarecchia.
Within the Oasis, in a wide bight of the river Marecchia, the rock of Saiano with, on the top, some evocative ruins and the Byzantine cylindrical tower.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Saiano, built on an ancient pagan temple, is equipped with three altars, has a beautiful bronze portal, built on a design by Arnaldo Pomodoro, and keeps a statue of Madonna and child, worshipped by women in childbed.
Saiano can be reached on foot from the river bed or through three hiking trails along the road between Torriana and Montebello.
Events: in July the Fair of Water, around the fountain, and the food and wine Fair of Scorticata - the hill of delights.
In the first weekend of September, the Feast of honey to fill up with sweetness.
For gourmets: renowned restaurants and inns with the typical cuisine of Romagna.
Curios: a legend tells that Gianciotto Malatesta, known for having violently put an end to the adulterine love between his brother Paolo and Francesca from Rimini, was killed in the basement of the fortress in 1304.
