It seems a film with Esther Williams, but the set is all Italian, indeed of Romagna. At the Swimming Stadium in Riccione everything is ready, lacking only in “camera! We swim”. Then, just like the champion of swimming that Hollywood made famous in the mid 40’s as the aquatic star of musical comedies, the Italian water gymnasts will be engaged in spectacular choreographies by swimming.
We are talking about the Italian Championship of Synchronized Swimming, that, from 22 to 24 February 2008 at the wonderful Olympic Swimming-pool of Riccione, will give us emotions and beauty.
In the ancient times already there are spectators fascinated by this “swimming danced”: the historians tell that in the Phoenician civilization existed girls and boys that, swimming as Tritons and Sirens, formed with their bodies beautiful figures in water and on the surface.
As sport it was formalized only in 1946 in the United States, with the organization of the first national championship. It was included in the Olympic program with the Los Angeles Games in 1984. In Italy it is practiced since 1975 and the athletic activity is regulated by the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN).
Aquatic sport, at agonistic level reserved to women, synchronized swimming is a choreography of exercises in water at music time and asks for coordination of movements, a sense of rhythm, the control of breath and of facial and gestures expression. A great care and a long preparation then, in order to acquire agility in movements and the control of the body.
In Riccione the athletes will compete in solo, duo, trio and team exercises and will have fixed upon them not only the eyes of the jury, of their teachers and families but those of the thousands of people who, we are sure, will fill the gallery.
The Swimming Stadium is ready to be the scene of an important sporting event and the city is preparing to welcome visitors at its best, as its use. For three days of magic aquatic dances with athletes-water fish that, attracted by a music, will go up on the surface and will give substance to a kaleidoscopic divertissement that will gain a storm of cheering.
